Self-Care Sunday- What does a mundane weekend have to do with self-care?

Published over 1 year ago • 3 min read

Happy Sunday Reader!

I stumbled across this quote on social media this week, and it resonated with me. So often (especially on social media!), society glorifies those "big moment" weekends. Where you come back after the weekend amazed at how you fit all of the activities, connection, fun, laughs, and life into 2 short days. While those big weekends are amazing, there is also a need for your life to include the quiet, mundane weekends as well. These weekends give you room to grow, rest, learn, connect, and rejuvenate yourself for the next big weekend.

Lets spend some time looking at how we can utilize these quiet, mundane weekends for the benefit of your overall wellness.

Self care tip.....

The fall season is the perfect time to start a "mundane weekend" habit. Fall calls you to slow down and cozy up, which are two perfect starting points for a weekend like this! For me, I cherish these slow weekends that are wide open with space for me to choose what I want to do. It's the one part of my week where I am not expected to be "on" or obligated to do anything for anyone besides myself.

So what does a quiet, mundane weekend look like? Pairing together some of your favorite simple moments and activities including:

  • Sleeping in
  • Preparing a special brunch or dinner meal
  • Cuddling with your kids or pets
  • Watching a favorite show/movie
  • Check in with yourself and your emotions
  • Move your body in a way you enjoy
  • Working on a calming hobby
  • Leisurely sipping a hot or cold beverage
  • Journal
  • Walking around the block or in a park
  • Bake(or buy) a favorite treat
  • Connect with a friend or family member
  • Prayer or meditation time
  • Grab a pastry and walk around downtown
  • Do one or two 5 minute tasks that make you feel accomplished
  • Spend some time dreaming or planning for something upcoming

Remember, it is not all or nothing! If you can't (or don't want to) fit a mundane weekend into your schedule, then don't! Or look for a smaller chuck of time. Maybe it is a mundane Sunday, or a mundane Monday evening at home. Just because you don't have a full weekend to give to this idea, start where your schedule allows and keep building from there!

Etsy Find of the week.....

Having a relaxing, calming hobby can be a great way to build in some mundane time that keeps your brain occupied. If you need an idea for a hobby that fits the bill, here are some great starter kits from Etsy that could help you find your new calling!

Macramé is super popular right now! Learn how and make these fun Christmas trees!

Liven up your taste buds by creating your own personal hot sauce blend!

Get started with some embroidery with this kit designed just for beginners!

Create some wonderful smelling candles with this kit!

Are you a cheese lover? Learn the art of cheese making with this fun kit!

Upcoming week intention......

Plan a "mundane weekend" for yourself in the upcoming weeks. Even if it's not an entire weekend, find a small pocket of time and protect it! With the busyness of the holidays coming up, having some time in your schedule for you to spend some time on yourself and the important people in your life is key. Make it happen!

Weekly good news to share.....

If your best monotonous moments come when you are traveling, I have some AirBnB news to share with you! My friend Whitney and her crazy ideas was recently announced as the winner of Airbnb's OMG contest to build some insane, unorthodox vacation rentals. Specifically, Whitney's giant flower pot (the top image of the article) was one of the winners! She is going to start building it this summer and you can keep an eye on the progress here! If you are ever looking to stay in the Boise area, book a stay at the giant flower pot!

Finding space in your life for these mundane moments is key in how to fight the cycle of burnout. As the fall season gets busier and busier, those who felt exhausted headed into fall are now fighting some burnout. Recognizing the signs and taking intentional steps to counter-act the burnout is key early on in the process before you completely burnout. Take some time to check out this post and see if you can identify where you are at in the burnout cycle.

One thing I am loving this week.....

I love fall and then coziness of the Thanksgiving season! While I also love the Christmas season, I am trying really hard to hold space and enjoy the time of fall before Thanksgiving. But, you are warned..... The day after Thanksgiving, I will hit Christmas with a vengeance!

In the mean time, as we all are starting to think about our Thanksgiving holiday (or just some warm, cozy, and delicious foods!), here are some of my favorite roundups of Thanksgiving recipe ideas to check out!

What is your favorite Thanksgiving recipe? I would love for you to share it over on our Instagram page!

Happy Sunday Reader! It finally feels like summer may be just around the corner! Finally! One of my favorite parts of summer is how it feels like everyone is out, about, and mingling. I run into so many people in the summer, that I never see the rest of the year! Loneliness can happen any time of the year, but it can be especially difficult in the summer when it seems like everyone is doing things with other people. Self care tip..... Social media, Zoom, smart phones, and email have left us...
