Self-Care Sunday- How can you use a time change to leverage a new habit?

Published over 1 year ago • 3 min read

Happy Sunday Reader!

It's that time of year again! The annoying time change, where the clocks move back an hour and take away 1 precious hour of daylight in the evening. How can you adjust your schedule and routine slightly to maximize the new time change for your benefit? Lets look at some ideas!

Self care tip.....

Take a moment and reflect back to the fall time change last year. Ask yourself how you felt as you were transitioning to the adjusted time, and if there were any parts of your life that just didn't "work"?

Here are a few ideas of routine or habits you can use to make the most of the time change:

Plan something fun to do with your extra hour on the weekend of the time change!

This could be as simple as getting an extra hour of sleep (yes I love sleep too!). You could also plan to grab coffee with a friend, go for a short hike, decorate your house for the fall, cozy up with a favorite book or movie. The possibilities are endless! This gives you something to enjoy and look forward to while you are managing the time change transition.

Be intentional with your extra hour of daylight in the morning!

Technically, you don't lose an hour of daylight, it just moves from the afternoon to the morning. However, when we are watching the sun set at 4:30pm, we don't always remember that fact! Now is the time to make the most of the daylight in the morning. You don't have to get up at 5am to do so (hint... It will be dark then!), but carving out some extra time to spend 10 minutes in the sunlight can make a huge difference on your mood and vitamin D levels.

Do a few sun salutation yoga poses outside in the morning, facing the sun, walk slowly to/from your bus stop and enjoy the cool air on your face, drink your morning coffee standing outside or facing a window inside, go for a 10 minute walk around the block to get your blood pumping in the morning. All are great ideas for how you can get a little more daylight during a time of year when it feels like there is limited daylight.

Use the extra dark evening to get cozy and enjoy inside activities!

Everyone hates when it starts to get dark around 4-5 in the evening. Embrace that dark and cozy time with some indoor activities. Plan a family dinner several nights a week, get together with friends for warm drinks and chatting, binge the latest hot tv show, or start a new craft hobby for those long evenings. There are many ways to slow down, get cozy, and enjoy the longer evenings we have during this season!

Happy Sunday Reader! It finally feels like summer may be just around the corner! Finally! One of my favorite parts of summer is how it feels like everyone is out, about, and mingling. I run into so many people in the summer, that I never see the rest of the year! Loneliness can happen any time of the year, but it can be especially difficult in the summer when it seems like everyone is doing things with other people. Self care tip.....
