Self-Care Sunday- How can you practice self-compassion this week?

Published over 1 year ago • 3 min read

Happy Sunday Reader!!

The next few weeks we are going to look closer at your self-talk habits and how to reframe negative self-talk to a positive, compassionate inner voice. This is a tricky topic that takes a lifetime to learn and master (and maybe more than a lifetime!). While you are learning and working on this, give yourself some compassion and grace as you work through the learning process.

Self care tip.....

Over the next few weeks, we are going to talk about negative self-talk. We learned recently, just how damaging this negative self-talk voice can be to our self-care and our own inner spirits. By identifying the negative self-talk in our minds, we can make a powerful shift in how we talk to ourselves.

One key to this, is recognizing that the opposite of negative self-talk is not "positive self-talk". In this shift, we are looking for realistic and compassionate self-talk. Positive self-talk can be emotionally toxic in other ways, by being unrealistic, disconnected from reality, and can set yourself up for disappointments.

Positive self-talk can look like any of the following:

  • I am capable and strong, I can get through this.
  • Even though it wasn’t the outcome I hoped for, I learned a lot about myself.
  • I might still have a way to go, but I am proud of how far I have already come.
  • Tomorrow is a chance to try again, with the lessons learned from today.
  • I will give it my all to make this work.
  • I can’t control what other people think, say or do. I can only control me.
  • This is an opportunity for me to try something new.
  • This didn't go according to my plan, but it still was successful.
  • I can learn from this situation and grow as a person.

Disconnecting yourself as a person from the outcome of the activity can help with combatting negative self-talk. If a presentation at work doesn't go well, that doesn't translate to you being a failure as a person. You personally, still have all the strengths, talents, and positive traits you always had.

Etsy Find of the week.....

If you need some Halloween inspiration, I have some fun home decor ideas from Etsy!

Add some decor to your home with this fun Halloween wood cutout!

I love this idea for handing out candy if you wont be home on Halloween. In the mean time, I would use it to hold a fun fall Mum or other flower for my porch!

Welcome your fall guests with this fun, spooky welcome mat!

These are the types of fun and subtle decorations I love! A book of spells that just looks like a normal book on your bookshelf!

Upcoming week intention......

From the list above, or on your own, come up with a couple of positive self-talk phrases that resonate with you and you can pull out quickly this week when negative thoughts set in.

Weekly good news to share.....

What does a complement mean to you? Does it matter if that complement is from someone you know or a stranger? When surveyed, 2,000 adults in the UK said that complementing a stranger in the street is the top thing adults would most like to do in public, but don't have the guts to do so. How do you feel about giving or receiving complements between strangers?

Maybe it is a habit you could start that just may make a positive difference in your life and in someone else's life?

Featured blog post of the week......

As the weather turns chilly, one of my favorite pastimes is curling up with a good book. I am a nerd, who loves reading finance books! Even if you are not, these are all easy books for a finance beginner, that are an enjoyable read! Check one out and see what you can learn that will help you in your financial situation!

One thing I am loving this week.....

With Halloween just a few weeks away, I am starting to think about what Halloween decorations I want to put up! I am not someone who goes all out with Halloween decorations, I prefer to have some subtle touches to the holiday around my house. Here are some of my favorite ideas and inspiration for this year! What catches your eye and sparks some imagination?

PS, you can also find some great ideas on Etsy!

Happy Sunday Reader! It finally feels like summer may be just around the corner! Finally! One of my favorite parts of summer is how it feels like everyone is out, about, and mingling. I run into so many people in the summer, that I never see the rest of the year! Loneliness can happen any time of the year, but it can be especially difficult in the summer when it seems like everyone is doing things with other people. Self care tip..... Social media, Zoom, smart phones, and email have left us...
